IHRC SMM: Over 200 Women and Girls Trained, Empowered in IDP Camp to Mark
Global Day Elimination of Violence Against Women in Nigeria
Abuja: Over 200 women and girls have been trained by Officials of the
Special Monitoring Mission International Human Rights Commission (SMM IHRC) at
the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja on 25th November 2022.
The training Coordinated by Comrade Adeoye David Olusegun of the
International Human Rights Commission in collaboration with Broken But Mendable
Life Foundation (BBML) was organized for IDP Camp Dwellers in Apo Area called
the Malaysian Garden Abuja, in commemoration of the 2022 International Day for
the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The skills acquisition which centralizes on their components was organized
to train and empower women and girls on different entrepreneurial skills. The
training includes Soap making, Vaseline making, and Adire making. With the
completion of this one-day training, about 10 women identified to have gained
better knowledge than others and were empowered to start production.
While responding, Comrade Adeoye David Olusegun said that the major reason
behind the initiative was that it is difficult to address issues concerning
eradicating gender-based violence without empowering women to become a voice.
“An independent woman cannot be silenced. So our move was in the direction to
perfectly annihilate the program and agenda of the abuser by empowering our
women and girls with the required tools for survival", he added.
You would recall that the Global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based
Violence Campaign is an international campaign to challenge violence against
women and girls. The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10
December, Human Rights Day.
Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are people who are forced to flee their
homes due to armed conflict, generalized violence, violations of human rights,
or natural or human-made disasters, but who remain within their own country.
Other SMM Officials that facilitated the training were Adeoye David,
Akpokodje Adaku, Hassan Adamu, Bitrus Emmanuel, Yakubu Rabiu, Idikwu
Cecilia, Udo Emmanuel, Damilola Afolabi and Zuati Babaferi.
