THE SMM IHRC GIVE PREVENTION TIPS DUE TO OUTBREAK OF CHOLERA IN BAUCHI STATE.
THE HEALTH FACILITIES NEED OUTBREAK RESPONSE RESOURCES & HEALTH PROMOTION MATERIALS.
A total of 710,212 persons one year and above have been vaccinated with the OCV in the five-day reactive campaign that ended on 28 July 2021 in the first cycle. The second and the final cycle will soon commence after 2 weeks for the same persons. Bauchi state has deployed Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) in combination with other community control measures to stop the transmission of the disease and save lives.
Bauchi state recorded its first confirmed case on 24 April 2021 from a 37-year-old Woman in Magami community of Burra ward in Ningi local government area (LGA). So far, the state has recorded 9,091 cases and has the highest number of cases among the 17 states which reported cases country.  Meanwhile Bauchi LGA has the highest burden of the outbreak in the state with 6,273 (69%) of all reported cases and 43% (37) of the total deaths.
Cholera is transmitted directly through food or water contaminated with fecal material from an infected person. Most infected people develop no symptoms or only mild diarrhea. However, approximately one in 10 infected people develop severe cholera, which causes symptoms including profuse, watery diarrhea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, restlessness or irritability. Symptoms typically appear 2-3 days after exposure, but can develop up to 5 days after exposure. Individuals with severe cholera can develop acute renal failure, severe electrolyte imbalances, and coma. If left untreated, these can lead to shock and rapid death.
I meet one of the vaccinated person where he inform me he feel so empowered and so protected after being vaccinated, educated about the causes and preventive measures of cholera from health workers and other community volunteers.
He also say In my neighborhood many families were infected with some persons dying due to our lack of awareness on the causes and safety measures. However, today the rate of infection has gone down significantly due to adherence to the lifesaving messages on the prevention of the disease.
here are some basics prevention ways to follow:
1. Make sure to drink and use safe water to brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, and make ice It is safe to drink and use bottled water with unbroken seals, and canned or bottled carbonated beverages.
If bottled water is not available, use water that has been properly boiled, chlorinated, or filtered.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and safe water Before, during, and after preparing food for yourself or your family
After using the latrine or toilet After cleaning your child’s bottom Before and after caring for someone with cholera.
3. Use latrines or bury your poop, do not poop in any body of water Use latrines or other sanitation systems, like chemical toilets, to dispose of poop.
Wash hands with soap and safe water after pooping, Clean latrines and surfaces contaminated with poop using a solution of 1 part household bleach to 9 parts water.
4. Cook food well (especially seafood), keep it covered, and eat it hot. Peel fruits and vegetables Be sure to cook shellfish (like crabs and crayfish) until they are very hot all the way through.
Avoid raw foods other than fruits and vegetables that you have peeled yourself.
5. Clean up safely in the kitchen and in places where the family bathes and washes clothes
Wash yourself, your children, diapers, and clothes, 30 meters (approximately 100 feet) away from drinking water sources.
